Obligatory Halloween pics.

I'm not in much a writing mood lately as you might have noted. It ebbs and flows and truly when I'm not in the mood, you don't want to read my writing.

You're welcome.

But, obligatory Halloween pics are in order. They are too funny not to share. And sweet Jody asked {her son donned a similar costume}.

Without further adieu {because remember, I'm not in a writing mood}, I present Little Miss Thang and her bestie as Thing 1 and Thing 2 . . . with a twist. Little Miss Thang is Thing 2, which is important to note because . . . . ?! This is why I should not be writing at all.  Geesh.

Pictured below is Boy Genius, Little Miss Thang and Hi-Ho. Hi-Ho will one day be Boy Genius's wife. He doesn't know this yet. Nor does she. But, in time, they will appreciate the genius behind this pairing {despite the seven year age difference}. And obviously, there is a large dowry involved because Boy Genius is such a great catch.

Feel free to also note my rotted pumpkins. Absolutely disgusting. Or, perchance, spooky given that I otherwise failed to decorate much at all. Apparently I'm not in a decorating mood either.

Despite my obvious apathy, I truly hope you all had a wonderful Halloween!!

Halloweens' Past.

Halloween is a big occasion at our house. We live on a boulevard of sorts and kids come from far and wide to trick-or-treat on this street. And we've been spending Halloween on our street far before it even was our street. The tradition started at our good friend's, and my duo's godparent's house, before either of us even had children.

Of course, as soon as our duo was born they joined in the madness.

Unwillingly at first.

Here's a glimpse of the ghouls and goblins of our Halloweens' Past narrated by the duo themselves.

2003
Little Miss Thang - Mom, we are only seven months old and have no idea why you are insistent on torturing us. This dress does not fit {size 6 to 18 mos - that doesn't even make any sense} and is horribly scratchy. And no, I'm not posing with my hand, I'm trying to get this stupid "crown" off my head. I have no hair - deal with it and stop putting uncomfortable headbands on my head.

Boy Genius - Mom, I've lost 2 pounds of body weight sweating in this costume while you attempt to get both of us looking anywhere near the camera. I only weigh about 14 pounds so you better get me out of it before the neighbors call CPS.

2004
Little Miss Thang - Seriously, wild indians?! So not politically correct.

Boy Genius - Hey, at least I'm comfortable. Check out our cousins {really friends and our goddaughters} dressed as chicks.

2005
Little Miss Thang - Yes, this dress finally fits but it is still scratchy. I see I finally have enough hair to wear a proper crown. But don't think I didn't notice you wouldn't even spring for a new costume for me this year. You've always loved him more.

Boy Genius - I'm sweating . . .  again. Ninety percent humidity and you dress me in vinyl!?!

2006
Little Miss Thang -  This is perfect. Perfect. You finally nailed it. I am a vision of pink perfection.

Boy Genius - Go Diego Go! Yes, you have told me at least 30 times but I know I will never understand or appreciate the extreme lengths to which you went to find this official rescue pack and vest. Thanks, though, it feels good to spend the evening without sweat trickling down my brow.

2007
Little Miss Thang - I finally get to wear high heels. And makeup {self-applied}. Squeal!

Boy Genius - I know I wanted to be Buzz Lightyear, but another Halloween with ninety percent humidity - really!? Remind me next year to bulk up mid-October. I think I'm back down to my 3-year-old weight.

2008
Little Miss Thang - "I'm not a doctor, I'm a surgeon. They are the best." I will never wear makeup again. And I hate pink.

Boy Genius - Let me show you how I can turn a penny into a dime. But no, I cannot turn your $1 into $100.  You are not the first person to ask.

2009
Little Miss Thang - I finally realized Chasing Fireflies has a stunning display of Halloween costumes. And, no, this is not makeup - it is artistic face painting.

Boy Genius - Again with the long story about the trouble you went through to get this costume! Will a simple thank you suffice? Let the wild rumpus begin! And can she get her feathers out of my face?!

2010
Little Miss Thang - Yes, I want to go trick-or-treating barefoot. If you won't let me wear black high heels then I'm forced to go barefoot.

Boy Genius - I would never go barefoot. I already put my shoes on without you even having to ask. You've always loved me more.  Obviously.

Carmel Apple Martini.

On Monday evening we'll host a small gathering of friends at our house for Halloween fun. I'm serving chili, pizza for the kids {other than Little Miss Thang who won't eat pizza - seriously!}, a big green salad, and candy corn fudge.

But because Halloween isn't just for kids I'll also serve an adult libation marrying sour and sweet. I'm secretly hoping sipping this number will keep me out of the kids' candy.

Though I'm not placing any bets.

Candy Corn Fudge

As a general rule I don't eat desserts or candies that do not involve chocolate. I only have so many calories to spare and don't like wasting time on anything other than my first love.

Candy corn, however, may be the exception to that rule. It's addictive and so small. What's another one . . . or two . . . or ten?!

So imagine my pure delight at the thought of candy corn fudge. Little Miss Thang will be beside herself with excitement -- fudge is her 1st favorite treat and candy corn is also high on the list!

Honestly, if I can get through the next few months and still fit into any of my jeans it will be a miracle of gigantic proportions.

Either that or something else will take on gigantic proportions.
via Framed Cooks

Candy Corn Fudge

1 7-oz. jar marshmallow cream
1 1/2 cups sugar
2/3 cup evaporated milk
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 cups candy corn (about 12 oz.)
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1. Line an 8-inch square pan with foil; butter foil. Combine marshmallow cream, sugar, evaporated milk and butter in a large, heavy pan. Bring mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture reaches 235°F on a candy thermometer, 10 to 15 minutes.

2. Remove from heat and stir in candy corn and chocolate chips, stirring until chocolate melts. Immediately transfer to foil-lined pan and smooth top until even. Chill until set, at least 2 hours. Cut into one inch squares.

This is pure evil and the perfect Halloween treat!

Soups on Sunday - Monday Edition + a pic

Yes, it is Monday and I am nonetheless offering Soups on Sunday. You all understand. Yesterday was a bevy of excitement around here -- costumes, candy, pumpkins, spider webs, candy, friends, balloons, more candy, and finally, sugar-high induced sleep.

So I shamelessly offer soup on Monday. Because I love soup and soup is easy! And I need a little easy this morning. And this is truly a weeknight soup -- only a 30 minute simmer period required (and honestly, you could probably stop at 20 if that's all the time you have)!

So wipe off the cob webs, eat a piece of the kids' candy and prepare soup on Monday!

Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces (about 1 3/4 pounds)
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 cup sliced carrots (about 3 small)
  • 2 1/2 cups sliced zucchini (about 2 medium)
  • 2 (14.5-ounce) cans diced tomatoes with basil, garlic, and oregano
  • 2 (14.5-ounce) cans chicken broth
  • Grated Parmesan, optional

Directions

In a large Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add chicken, and cook for 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Add onion and carrot, and cook for 5 minutes. Stir in zucchini, diced tomatoes, and chicken broth. Bring to a boil; reduce heat, and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes. Top each serving with grated Parmesan, if desired.

And because you know I can't resist, I'll shamelessly add a Halloween picture of my darling duo.

And I realize I stole this painted pumpkin idea from someone here in the blogosphere! Thank you, thank you, thank you! They were quite a hit and it really did allow the kids to be more involved (because I still refuse to allow them to wield sharp battery operated knives - for all our sakes).

What a mother will do.

This is a post from last year when I maintained a private blog. I re-read it today and cried all over again. Tiffany, my favorite and the prettiest SITS girl, inspired me to share this story from the past.

______________________

For a Literature Parade at my duo’s elementary school, my darling six-year-old decided to go as Max, the character from the beloved book written and illustrated by Maurice Sendack, Where the Wild Things Are. I located a darling seller on Etsy to whom I was willing to pay $90 (yes, 90 USD) to make and ship to me a custom Max costume complete with crown. I placed the order on October 4th. Plenty of time.

Let the WILD RUMPUS START!

I sat back, proud of my purchase and waited. The Etsy seller I chose mentioned a 2 week turn around time.  Fine. Plenty of time. My Little Guy was beyond excited. And inquired, almost daily, when it would arrive. Any day now.

Any.  Day.

On October 20th, I sent a nice message to the Etsy seller inquiring sheepishly when my Max costume might ship. Radio silence. On October 21st, I sent a less-sheepish email asking for an estimated shipping date. Nothing. By October 22nd I was beginning to fear this seller had taken my 90 USD and . . . well she couldn’t have gotten too far, but still, why no response?!

Finally, a message on the 23rd:  “I’m putting the finishing touches on it and it will ship out tomorrow or Monday.” Ahhhhh. To which I nicely reply:  “Thank you so much for the response {FINALLY!!!}, just so you know I need to receive the costume by October 29th so my son can wear it on the 30th (not Halloween, the 31st). I did not note this initially because I had no idea we would be cutting it so close.”   “No problem” was the now quick response “I’ll send it priority mail and get you the tracking number as soon as I have it.”

On Monday, the 26th, I send another messages asking “tracking number yet?”  Nothing.

HUGE pit.

Late that night she replies and says “I’m putting the finishing touches on it now and will ship in the morning. Would you like me to send it Express mail?” WHAT?  She hasn’t even shipped it and we need to have it in our hands in 3 days.

GINORMOUS pit.

I promptly reply and state that she MUST send it Express mail to ensure I receive it on the 29th.

Tuesday morning. I constantly check for the tracking info to arrive. Nothing. My Little Guy comes home and asks again, “Has it Max arrived yet?”  I cannot explain why I had such a  bad feeling, but I guess it is a mother’s intuition. I just knew something was not going to work.  My life has been unusually hectic in the past few months. Money has been tight. This was a splurge and I so desperately wanted him to have this. To have something special. This is not my norm. I was a desperate housewife indeed.

Unfortunately, one who cannot sew.

Finally on Wednesday after an irate message from me, the seller responds that she has posted the parcel Express Mail and provides me with a tracking number. I immediately start tracking. It was not posted until 4:03 PM. I fear that is too late for Express Mail to be truly express.

I try to sleep. I wake up Thursday morning a nervous wreck.  Refresh.  Now it is in Texas but not local. I do not understand the intricate workings of the postal service, and I’m trying to be hopeful, but I can't shake the pit.

Refresh.

I go to lunch with my husband because he asks {I’m certain he was trying to distract me}.  He tells me to relax -- if she sent it Express Mail it will arrive.  No, I insist, Express Mail is not always overnight. It is 1-2 days guaranteed.

Refresh.  It’s 2pm on Thursday and it’s STILL not in town. My normal mail carrier arrives. I ask him if there is still a chance it will arrive. He says no, not until tomorrow.

Nooooooooooo!!!!!  The whales at sea heard this moan. I have no doubt.

At 3:30 I meet My Little Guy at the bus stop.  He runs past me, excited to go home and try on his Max costume. I have to physically stop him. I am crying. He starts crying. No, honey, I explain, Max is not here and I’m afraid we won’t have it in time for the Literature Parade. You will have it for Halloween, though! Tears streaming. His face and mine.

He is such a sweet, old soul, though. HE finally tells ME it is OK. Killing me slowly. Once I compose myself, we start discussing other options for the Literature Parade and decide we can turn a paper maiche head into an Ugly Doll costume. This seems lame in comparison to the incredible costume we had planned, but he is a trooper and I’m proud of his ability to rebound.

I was not rebounding quite as quickly.

Refresh.

Ahhhhhh — now it shows it is in town. 4:00 PM. At the main post office. I call. No answer. There is no way this costume is going to sit in a post office when I need it at 8 AM tomorrow morning. Certainly I can convince someone to help me.

Enter Denise. Denise is a mother too and a postal worker at my local post office. I explain my desperation.  She says she’ll call the main post office and try to track it down for me. A glimmer. Denise calls back. The main post office has a fire alarm blaring and they are evacuating. Seriously?! She cannot  locate the package. She does say, however, that she will be in at 6:30AM and that I can call her and see if it made it to my local post office. She cannot guarantee that it will.  She explains that sometimes express packages will be dispatched straight from the main post office out for delivery.  Oh, GOD, PLEASE!!!!
I stay up too late that night converting an alien head into a red OX Ugly Doll head. I barely sleep. I  continually refresh my computer screen in my dreams.  I wake up at 6AM and refresh for real.  It is now at MY post office. The post office at which Denise will report for duty at 6:30!!

I call Denise at 6:31. I tell her I know it is there, according to the tracking number it arrived at 5:24am. Yes, she says she has the package. Relief floods over my body. Thank you GOD!

Thank you DENISE!

Of course our post office does not open until 8:30. The Literature Parade starts at 8:15. Denise, though, is FURIOUS at the seller and says she should have known it wouldn’t be delivered until Friday. She agrees to meet me in the lobby. I meet her at 7:02. The tracking will later record that exact time {yes, I did again refresh even after I had it in my hands – that tracking system really is quite accurate}.  I finally have my hands on the package.  I race home and see my sweet boy eating his pancakes happy as can be. When he saw the package, though, he was ecstatic!
Max!?!??

Yes, honey, it’s here.  More tears - mine, not his.

Cutest.  Max.  EVER.

The Literature Parade was darling. Max was a hit.
Saturday morning My Little Guy and I woke up at 6 AM again. We  purchased an obscene amount of breakfast tacos and called Denise from the lobby. She said it was just her job. She did not expect a thank you. Well she deserved it and more. My Little Guy thanked her. I thanked her. Denise said she had to explain to the other postal workers {presumably not mothers} the crazy things a mother will do. We shared a laugh.

It is amazing what a mother will do. And moreover, I’m absolutely amazed I’m THAT mother.

But is there any question?!?

Not at all: I’d do it all over again.

Green Halloween?!

I have previously posted Environmental Working Group's advice on sunscreens and shared with you their sunscreen app.  I appreciate their research and honestly try to keep as many toxins out of my house as possible. Don't we all want non-toxic houses?!? Of course!

That said, the most recent report I received from EWG entitled Tips to Green Your Halloween nearly ruined my day, or rather, my Halloween!  To read the full report click here. But, spoiler alert: it make put a crimp in your ghoulish Halloween spirit!

Little Miss Thang and friend, 2009
Here is a quick list of toxic items to avoid:
  • Face paint / makeup (lead)
  • nail polish (toluene)
  • colored hairspray (toxic fumes)
  • candles (petroleum based)
  • synthetic face masks or teeth (phthalates)
  • paper  plates (wasteful)
  • store-bought costumes (wasteful)
  • candy (hideous chemicals lurking within)
  • decorations (other than pumpkins and hay).

So let's discuss the errors in this Halloween 2009 photo alone:
  • Face paint - check
  • colored hairspray - check
  • candles - you can't see them, but I remember the lovely aroma
  • paper plates - just out of camera shot, but even worse -- styrofoam cups
  • Store-bought costumes - check
  • decorations - check (note the plastic figurines strewn about my witches' brew)
Needless to say, I have room to grow. As I said when discussing my choice of sunscreen, we must take everything in moderation. Certainly we can live a little greener and less toxic without giving up the fun of dressing in flammable materials and begging door-to-door for candy! Right?!

I have stopped burning candles incessantly at home.  While I do enjoy the fragrance they provide, I do not want their petroleum filth in my house. I've also changed to DuWop's toluene free toe nail polish. It may not be as shiny as others, but that toluene stuff is bad news! And, yes, I will read the ingredients on the candy I purchase. Maybe some are better (Snickers) than others (Air Heads)?! And I'm not a big fan of paper plates. I'm not. But if you have ever seen Halloween night at my house, you too would insist on paper! That is where I draw the line. For now.

So, the bottom line is this:  It is good to be informed. It is wise to make choices which keep our homes clean and free off harmful toxins. One little green step at a time.

What steps are you taking to make your house green? How does or does that affect your holiday planning?

Wicked treats!

{our sidewalk, Halloween 2009}
For some reason our street is a mecca of Halloween goodness (that is me being positive). It is actually completely insane. People come from all over town en masse. Hundreds and hundreds of children (and some who are clearly not still children, but that is another post entirely). They literally line the street forming a constant stream up to our door. We certainly don't go inside and wait for the bell to ring. We simply sit on the front stoop and pass out the treats. All. Night. Long. Even when we turn off the lights and shut the front gate (clearly the universal sign that we are done), we have people knock at the door. Numerous times. This year I am making a sign that reads as follows: "I spent $200 on Halloween candy. I'm so sorry you were not one of the first 5,000 people to trick or treat this evening. Next year stop by before 10pm!" (I'm not still sounding positive, am I?!)

{my little guy and little miss thang, 2009}
If I had to sit outside alone I would have a hard time thinking it was at all enjoyable. So instead, we have a party! Every Halloween a few of our favorite families join us for the madness. The dads take the kids trick or treating and the moms generally hang back and manage the crowds. Cocktail in hand, of course! When the kids return from their outing with the dads we take shifts on the front stoop and have an quick and easy dinner together. We generally don't serve sweets for obvious reasons, but these savory items caught my eye.

Now this is positive -- something darling for me to create to serve the little people for whom I endure this madness at all!

Ghostly Pretzel Sticks
Dip pretzel sticks in melted white chocolate about three inches.  While pretzels are still wet, arrange mini chocolate chips to create eyes and a mouth.  Let dry until firm, about 30 minutes.

Mummy Dogs
2 8-oz cans of crescent rolls
14  5 to 6 inch hotdogs
mustard
Heat oven at 375.
Unroll each can of crescent rolls, then separate at perforations, creating 4 rectangles from each can. With scissors, cut each rectangle into 7 long strips, making a total of 28 strips from each can of dinner rolls (56 strips total).
Wrap 4 strips of dough around each hot dog to look like bandages, stretching dough slightly to completely cover hot dog. About 1/2-inch from one end of each hot dog, separate the bandages so hot dog shows through for the “face.” Place wrapped hot dogs on two baking sheets and bake until until golden brown, about 15 minutes. Using mustard, draw features on face.
